In Stories on March 7, 2018 by sioso Tagged: , , , ,

Each year around the world, International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8.

Women Tree

Over time and distance, the equal rights of women have progressed.

We celebrate the achievements of women while remaining vigilant and tenacious for further sustainable change.

There is global momentum for championing women’s equality.
Give a woman a hug today. Celebrate their achievements specially on this Day.

Reach out to someone that has inspired you, and also be an inspiration to someone.

Maya Angelou’s ‘Phenomenal Woman’ to you

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I’m telling lies.
I say,
It’s in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It’s the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can’t touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them
They say they still can’t see.
I say,
It’s in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I’m a woman

Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

Now you understand
Just why my head’s not bowed.
I don’t shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It’s in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
The need of my care,
‘Cause I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

The book HALF THE SKY presents stories of worldwide abuse and exploitation of women and girls and how they can be empowered to overcome adversity. The event was brought together around advocacy for the marginalised.

Organisers say:

Anyone who reads of the unbelievable, ongoing abuse of girls and women, yet sees their courage and resilience to overcome, will want to be part of that fight. Everyone can play a part in helping them build lives free of abuse, poverty and sex trafficking.

Mothers’ Day weekend is a wake up call for us to remember women of all ages who suffer inequality, discrimination and abuse.

We invite you to join us on Saturday, May 12th, connect with these organizations and learn about their courageous work. There will be opportunities for you to be involved, ongoing entertainment, activities for children and great raffle prizes.

Discover how you, too, can be involved and make a difference! HALF THE SKY awareness day is on May 12th.
