Brrr Spring!- warm up with a little ‘Mama says socialising’.

WHERE TO FIND Mama…

Story-Art project with seniors

Story-Art project with seniors

I am one of the four artists in a Renfrew-Collingwood (RC) community art/story project called ON THE TABLE.
Renfrew-Collingwood(RC) area seniors share stories that matter to them and contribute a personalised cloth representing their story which is then woven into the group tablecloth. The (RC) area roughly extends from Kingsway/Nanaimo to Boundary up to Broadway so a pretty large catchment.
The focus is to create textile artwork that tell the ‘dinner-time’ stories of the community elders in the form of table coverings.
My four FREE workshops will run on Thursdays in April (4,11,18,25) at 10:30am-12:30pm in the Slocan Field Art House, 2750 E. 29th Ave (in Slocan park next to 29th Ave Skytrain).  Folks can register directly with me at putahaton@gmail.com

Whether a quick way to find your cellphone (slim to iPhone size) in the ever expanding backpacks, courier bags and purses that we find ourselves carrying– we all need a little bag every now and again. West African Adinkra symbol influences are part of my original designs.

The Akan, then later Asante, people (Ghana/Côte d’Ivoire) created the adinkra symbols which incorporate their philosophies, folk-tales and culture. They represent popular proverbs and maxims, record historical events, express particular attitudes or behaviour related to depicted figures, or concepts uniquely related to abstract shapes.

The book HALF THE SKY presents stories of worldwide abuse and exploitation of women and girls and how they can be empowered to overcome adversity. The event was brought together around advocacy for the marginalised.

Organisers say:

Anyone who reads of the unbelievable, ongoing abuse of girls and women, yet sees their courage and resilience to overcome, will want to be part of that fight. Everyone can play a part in helping them build lives free of abuse, poverty and sex trafficking.

Mothers’ Day weekend is a wake up call for us to remember women of all ages who suffer inequality, discrimination and abuse.

We invite you to join us on Saturday, May 12th, connect with these organizations and learn about their courageous work. There will be opportunities for you to be involved, ongoing entertainment, activities for children and great raffle prizes.

Discover how you, too, can be involved and make a difference! HALF THE SKY awareness day is on May 12th.
